The Colour of God
May 13, 2007

Eld. William James Carter, The 1st

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1-2)

After reading this introduction, one would surely ask what this portion of Scripture has to do with the colour of God. Well, we will get to that in just a little bit but first let’s discuss how God feels about not only different races but the mixing of those races and then we will determine the colour of God, if there is a colour of God.

In the book of Numbers, chapter twelve, we find that Moses, born of the tribe of Levi, a Jew, married an Ethiopian woman. As a result of this mixed marriage Moses was made fun of by Miriam and Aaron. However, because Moses was a man of God and held in esteem by God, God became angry with Miriam and Aaron because of the way Moses was treated. Miriam then suffered with leprosy as punishment for disrespecting the man of God, Moses.

Now we know that Jews and Ethiopians are not only of a different race but also a very different skin complexion. This seemed to have no effect on the decision of Moses to marry this Ethiopian and certainly had no impression on God, as it is obvious that God condoned this inter-racial marriage in that Moses suffered no consequences from God.

John 3:16 states that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish… The word whosoever comes from the Greek word “pas” which is indicative and like unto the word all. It makes no qualifications of any sort and includes all of mankind. In Galatians chapter three versus twenty-four through twenty-nine, inclusive, we find that God truly has no regard to race when blessings are considered. God is just and this self-explanatory Scripture shows just how colour blind God is. The Scripture goes like this:

Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized in Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

This Scripture is further exemplified by the Scripture found in John 1:12 which reads “but as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name”. John 3:36 goes on to say that “he that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that beleiveth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him”.

The fact of the matter is that God could not care less as to the colour of a person’s skin. He does not care if you are North American, Central American ore South American. Being African or Russian, Chinese or Hawaiian, Indian or Aborigine has absolutely no bearing on the mindset of God. This brings us back to the introduction, which shows the Christian how he should and is expected to live.

Judging people simply on the basis of their skin colour or national origin is just as sinful as fornication. The Christian would need to rethink his thinking and not become conformed to the world and its way of thinking. A renewed mind would allow the Christian to see people as people and not as a race or as a colour.

Basically, the mindset of the Christian should be reflective of the things of God rather than pontificating in such idiosyncrasies that God does not even consider. The key is a renewed mind. Therefore, in the matter of the colour of God it really does not matter what colour God might be. God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23). Part of that truth is that God sees no colour in His people and expects His people to have like vision.
